The college was formerly a part of St. Joseph College and the Department of the Commerce was established in the same parent college. In 1972, the department became an independent college by getting its name as St. Joseph College of Commerce. The college became an autonomous institution in the year 2004, and now the college has its own independent examination and recognition system.

Admission is based on the Aptitude Test (SMAT), Group Discussion, Micro Presentation & Interview.
Eligibility Criteria:
No student shall be eligible for admission to the 1st Degree course through non-formal /distance education unless he/she has successfully completed 12 years of Schooling through an examination conducted by a Board/University or through National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).
Mandatory eligibility for the programmed is a pass at the +2 level ( Karnataka PUC, ISC, CBSE, NIOS, state boards) in any stream of Commerce, Science & Humanities from any recognized boards from India or abroad with a minimum of 60%.
